The horse represents:

Stamina, mobility, strength and power -- Draco has proven he has what it takes to achieve these means. Under better circumstances, he could learn to harness his desire for power and acceptance; thus, using his intellect to achieve these things.

Horses can symbolize coping under difficult circumstances -- As explained below, Draco is facing a great trial in his life.

Horse is love and devotion, loyalty -- Draco may not be kind or nurturing, but he is greatly loving and dedicated to those he deems worthy.

Boggart: When he was a little boy, Draco's boggart was humiliation at the hands of others. Since then, it has morphed into the image of his parents in death.

Mirror of Erised: Draco would see himself, Lucius, and Narcissa happy and safe. He'd have his prestige fully in tact.

Political View: Draco believes purebloods are more intelligent and more worthy than any other type of witch or wizard. As a child, he believed this meant purebloods were the only ones who could learn magic with any sort of reliability; and thus, were the only ones able to run the wizarding world. As explained more fully in the history portion of this application, Draco's ideals have been shattered since his sixth year. He has only known pain since then; the only one to offer any sort of hope or kind word was a 'mudblood lover' and now that man is dead, but Draco has not forgotten. He has only considered survival for the last years, and subsequently, hasn't thought much about his own political integrity.

Sexuality: Heterosexual.

Personality:

As a child, Draco believed the world should bend to his will. He was spoiled rotten and never taught to handle his issues with anything other than force and manipulation. While Lucius demanded that his son act proper, he never truly taught him the skills necessary to achieve this aim. Consequently, Draco was apt to meltdowns when life wronged him. He turned to taunts though he himself could not seem to muster the strength needed to hurt - the single exception being Harry Potter in his sixth year. However, he could not strike Hermione back or stomach attempting to kill Dumbledore in person until very late in the game. And even then, he could not lift his wand to murder.

Some would consider Draco a coward. He cowered behind Crabbe and Goyle his entire childhood and needed to use his father to feel powerful. However, this is not entirely true. Draco lacked social skills when it came to dealing with his peers. He knew no better than to strike out when Harry rebuked his friendship. Draco has low self-esteem, and while that is no excuse for bullying, it does not make him a coward. A coward could not have accomplished what Draco did. He would have fled to the other side immediately and begged Dumbledore for mercy. Instead, his pride caused him to take on the task himself -- the task he believed was his destiny.

Presently, Draco is lost. He still believes his blood entitles him to more, but he couldn't stomach the torture. He was scared out of his skull and now feels like a failure. He wishes he had talked to Dumbledore earlier or had at least not hesitated on the offer in the tower.

History:

CHILDHOOD

Draco was born to Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy. His birth had been much anticipated though his father did not outwardly express his pleasure. While his wife snuggled their son, Lucius sat to the side, admiring the child from afar. He was very excited to have an heir, but was wary of what life would be like for Draco thanks to Lucius' affiliation with Voldemort. Lucius believed purebloods held rights over the wizarding community, but did not wish for his child to experience pain or suffering. As such, Lucius jumped at the chance to rid himself of his Death Eater connections when Voldemort was assumed dead. Lucius still used his connections to his advantage, but kept Draco largely in the dark, only telling him the good side.

Draco was very much the spoiled prince. His parents made sure he wanted for nothing. They gave into any whim that wouldn't endanger him or bring shame to the Malfoy name. His mother was particularly accommodating though Lucius gave in quite often.

Lucius was the sole disciplinarian, doling out Draco's punishments when necessary. Lucius mostly lectured and used guilt to bend his son's will, but it was not unheard of for Draco to suffer a sore bottom. Though the punishments were never done in anger, Draco feared his father. He couldn't recall Lucius hugging him even once; his only memory of physical contact involved lying over his father's lap feeling the force of the man's hand.

Still, Draco knew how to manipulate his parents, using his sweet smile and well-timed tantrums to his benefit. The nannies and house elves despised the little brat though they were forced to obey his every command.

Draco was a precocious child. He did well in his studies as it was the sole point on which Draco could not debate Lucius. He is a Malfoy, and therefore, expected to be the best in all he does.

He was mesmerized by his father and so imitated his strut and words. More often than not, as a child, Draco did not truly understand what his father said or did, but he believed everything he said without question. He knew no other way and wasn't interested in learning.

Draco enjoyed his mother's coddling. He often cuddled with her, demanding stories and games. He often wished Lucius would hold him as his mother did, but quickly learned his father was a stand-offish individual. Nonetheless, Lucius' lack of physical love drove Draco to perfection. He needed Lucius to nod his approval. It was rare for Lucius to be satisfied, but Draco ate up every time his father gave him a short nod and 'Well done, Draco.'

HOGWARTS

Draco had asked his parents to attend Durmstrang once he realized how much Lucius despised Dumbledore. However, he quickly learned his mother held a power in the household that she could use when necessary. Narcissa threw a hissy fit, causing Lucius to not even entertain the notion of sending Draco anywhere other than Hogwarts. Moreover, though disappointed, Draco would secretly be pleased that he was closer to home as the years passed.

Despite not being allowed to attend his first choice, Draco was still very much excited to start school and be sorted into Slytherin. The idea that he could be sorted anywhere else was completely ludicrous to the boy. Therefore, when Draco met Harry that fateful day in Diagon Alley, it was all he could talk about. Lucius had told Draco that Harry was a powerful young wizard and so Draco sort to impress the other child in his tales of brooms, parents, and Hogwarts. When Harry seemed disinterested, Draco felt rejected and quickly complained to Lucius when he came to fetch him. Annoyed, Lucius assured his son that he was the best and Harry would quickly come around. However, Lucius recalled James Potter and only hoped the Gryffindor's son wouldn't follow in his footsteps.

At the platform, Draco sort to be the young man his father told him he should act like. He stood, shoulders erect, as his mother fawned and fretted. He kissed her cheek lightly, but moved away when she made to embrace him. He then shook Lucius' hand, ignoring the butterflies flying in his stomach.

On the train, Draco once again sort out Potter. Finding him with a Weasley, Draco wondered what was so wrong with himself that Harry preferred the red-head. Not knowing how else to behave, Draco quickly insulted Weasley, but had the tables turned when his name was ridiculed. Abashed, he hurried back to the children such as Pansy who knew better than to insult Draco Malfoy.

Nonetheless, Draco remembered his father's words about Harry being important to their kind and tried one more time to befriend the boy. Rebuked yet again, Draco vowed from that day forward to make the boy's life miserable.

However, as the years would demonstrate, that was a near impossible task. Though Draco's marks were superior to Potter's and he could offer the boy a formidable match in Quidditch, luck seemed to find Harry at every corner, rendering Draco never quite good enough. Coupled with the fact that Granger managed to beat Draco in nearly every subject, Hogwarts proved to not be a happy time for the blonde.

The one bright spot for Draco was Pansy Parkinson. Though she was not the beauty or gentle soul Draco believed his mother to be, the girl worshipped him and Draco ate it up. He might not have loved her in the same way, but he felt good around her and used it to his advantage.

Things grew worse his fifth year when Lucius was imprisoned. Draco hated seeing his mother cry and hated himself for not being able to support her. He missed his father terribly and felt lost without Lucius telling him exactly how to behave and what to think. For the first time, Draco had his own choices to make. It was a sour pill to swallow considering he had briefly experienced the feeling of being in control when acting as a member of the Inquisitorial Squad. Once again, he was bested by Potter.

Left to his own devices, Draco made a fool-hardy decision that would haunt his every step for years to come. He was approached by the Lord himself and instructed to kill Dumbledore in exchange for the safety of his mother and father. Instead of running straight to Dumbledore, who, though flawed, would have done everything in his power to help Draco, the young man agreed to perform the task.

The marking ceremony was not at all what Draco expected. For one, Lucius was not present to witness his son becoming a man. For another, Snape didn't seem particularly pleased with the events and kept barking orders about behavior to Draco. Receiving the mark was the most painful experience Draco had ever gone through (even more so than the agony he would feel when Potter would use the unforgivable against him later that year); furthermore, he would have nightmares pretty much every night in the coming years.

Draco started sixth year determined to act the significant man he believed he was. He took immense delight in showing off his mark to a few trusted Slytherins and even greater satisfaction in punishing Potter for eavesdropping.

As the months rolled on, Draco became desperate. His marks fell, his weight dropped, and he no longer spent time with anyone he previously cared for. He sobbed to Moaning Myrtle and no longer knew who to trust. The Lord was not the wizard Draco had revered; instead, Voldemort was a bitter, vengeful man who cared nothing for his followers. Scared, Draco no longer trusted even Snape. He turned to Bellatrix not only to please his mother, but because he hoped being a blood relation would cause his aunt to take pity on him. Little did Draco know.

Finally able to succeed in allowing the DEs into the school, Draco got his first taste of death. Years earlier, he had laughed off Cedric's, but, now witnessing the horror, he could not stomach it, never mind cause one himself. He faced off with Dumbledore, completely dumbstruck and terrified.

Hearing that Dumbledore had virtually saved his life, Draco began to doubt his choices even more. Granted, the man had never seemed to treat the Slytherins fairly, but he was offering him a way out. Draco wanted to accept -- he truly wanted to --

Draco would never get to make his final choice as the other DEs burst onto the tower. Snape finished Dumbledore off, and thus, Draco was trapped.

THE AFTERMATH

Draco would never understand how he made it out of Hogwarts alive, but he did know he owed a great deal to Severus Snape. While Snape had no choice but to deliver Draco to the Lord, he begged for mercy on the boy's behalf so that Voldemort, feeling charitable after his enemy's death, spared Draco's life. However, Draco had still not done exactly as the Master had cited and still had to be punished. Voldemort tossed the task to one of his minions and for the next few days Draco was imprisoned in a dark dungeon with no food or water. Rats ran rampant and Draco passed out from heat, exhaustion, and fear more than once. Finally, Voldemort called Draco forth and issued the final blow --- the Crucio.

In hindsight, the mark's pain was nothing in comparison.

Nevertheless, Snape once again interfered and managed to secure Lucius' release. Draco was thrilled to have his father back, but quickly realized the man no longer held any power or rank. The Malfoys were finished and the situation seemed bleaker than bleak.

THE PRESENT

Though Draco was freed due to Narcissa's lie about Harry's death, he is not entirely grateful for it. He still feels responsible and often lashes out against those who try to befriend him as a result. He has finished Hogwarts, but sees a dreary future.
